The Bombshell FBI Warning Issued This Week

Fake IT calls, sketchy flash drives, AND social engineering?

The FBI issued a warning this Tuesday about the Silent Ransom Group (SRG).

Their scam is posing as your IT department or provider, calling or emailing an employee, and talking them into a “routine maintenance” remote session, during which they steal your data.

The twist? If the remote approach doesn’t work, they show up at the office. Someone walks up to the front desk, wearing a lanyard, and plugs a USB drive into the target computer. They then copy your data out and leave.

The thing about this hack is that it’s very hard to catch it in the act. The threat actors have been granted access to your PC, use normal file transfer programs, and work quickly to identify key documents to move. Most cybersecurity measures won’t flag that. They’re persistent, too: the FBI reports they will call clients and vendors of the businesses they attack to increase pressure, and they’ll post client information on their website.

While this group’s favorite targets appear to be large law firms sitting on valuable client data, they’ve also hit healthcare, insurance, and finance.

Avoid Scams Like This One:

If you are a Facet client, you can always call us at (309) 689-3900 to verify that one of our techs is reaching out or visiting your office.

Similarly, if you work in a larger organization with an internal IT staff, verify unexpected visits from new people with a phone call. A few seconds can save you from disaster, and IT professionals won’t be offended by an extra security measure.

The bet these guys are making is that your team is too polite to ask questions. Prove them wrong and stay a little skeptical.

Need guidance on cybersecurity measures or reliable IT support? Reach out at (309) 689-3900 to book time with us to go over your strategy.
